2023 FALL SEASON

Latino Theater Company completes 2023 with fall season of premieres

Latino Theater Company will partner with two Los Angeles-based Asian American companies and San Francisco’s Magic Theatre to close out 2023
with a fall season of exciting premieres at downtown’s Los Angeles Theatre Center.

In this new play, CioCio from Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly completes her suicide, only to wake up realizing she is trapped in a never-ending loop of her story. Then Miss Saigon’s Kim joins the void, thrusting another tragic heroine into the deadly cycle, until a mysterious office woman throws their worlds out of balance. This Is Not a True Story unravels the history of Orientalist art and theatre, and looks at what happens when the tragic Asian heroine takes control of her own story.

Set inside a nearly abandoned Catholic monastery, a small group of Brothers world is exploded with the sudden arrival of a man shot through the heart. The Travelers explores a disconnected community of Brown men in search of connection and corazon with intimate honesty and inspired humor. These travelers are emblematic of the communities of California’s Central Valley as they seek some soul connection in a state that is building prisons over schools and forgoing any sense of faith over fear-mongering. In the original voice of the Latinx/Latiné world, Alfaro’s writing breaks through religious dogma, recognizes cultural connections, and offers solace for communal souls.

Tacos La Brooklyn follows Chino, a young and ambitious Korean American who grew up in a foster family on Los Angeles’ Eastside, as he hopes to grow his successful taco stand, “Chino’s Underground Tacos,” into a brick-and-mortar restaurant. When Yesenia Tapia, a Mexican American social media influencer, accuses Chino of cultural appropriation and pandering to a gentrifying neighborhood, he must convince the community of his cultural authenticity in a multi-faceted and complicated city. A multilingual drama, Tacos La Brooklyn asks captivating questions about cultural appreciation vs. cultural appropriation in contemporary multi-ethnic Los Angeles.

The Latino Theater Company's 16th annual Gala, an evening of food and entertainment themed “Noche Mágica,” will take place on November 4 in the historic atrium grand lobby of The Los Angeles Theatre Center. For over 15 years, the company’s Gala has been a platform for celebrating remarkable artists, devoted supporters and outstanding community leaders. This year’s event will honor Los Angeles Community College District board trustee and district director for Senator Maria Elena Durazo Steven F. Veres with the Marco Antonio Firebaugh Legacy Award; actor and artist Pepe Serna with the Lupe Ontiveros Dream Award; and Los Angeles Chargers director of cultural affairs Liliana T. Pérez-Palacios with the Edith Perez Angel Award. Proceeds from the Gala will support Latino Theater Company's mission of nurturing groundbreaking productions, fostering new play development, and expanding arts education initiatives that enrich the cultural fabric of our vibrant city.

We return to Downtown L.A.’s Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels with La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin, the company’s signature holiday pageant that has taken place annually since 2002. Featuring over 100 actors, singers and indigenous Aztec dancers as well as children and seniors from the community, La Virgen is the City of L.A.’s largest theatrical holiday production. Join the tens of thousands who have become transfixed by the story of Juan Diego, a simple peasant to whom the Virgin Mary appeared on four occasions in the mountains of Tepeyac near Mexico City in 1531. Adapted for the stage by Evelina Fernández from the mid-16th century text The Nican Mopohua and performed in Spanish with English subtitles.

Building on the success of our recently completed spring season, which saw the lobby abuzz with new and familiar faces, we have curated an engaging fall season that speaks directly to the hearts of our community. Through powerful collaborations with exceptional companies, we unite our community in the art of storytelling. In these challenging times, it is crucial to share narratives that foster connections and inspire a brighter future. We warmly embrace our allies who recognize the significance of coming together. We elevate and celebrate them.
