LA VICTIMA | 1987
WRITTEN BY EL TEATRO DE LA ESPERANZA
DIRECTED BY JOSÉ LUIS VALENZUELA
Using the mass deportations of Mexicans both in the past and in the present as a historical framework, El Teatro de La Esperanza’s “La Victima,” juxtaposes factual incidents with the fictional life of Amparo Villa. The play’s two-track plot line follows Amparo’s life and also traces the story of her son, Samuel, who were separated during the deportations in the 1930s. Samuel’s rejection of his mother represents the ultimate repudiation of his history as a Mexican, a denial of who and what he really is.
La Victima was the Latino Theater Company's first main stage production at the Los Angeles Theater Center, produced as the Latino Theater Lab.
