Latino Theater Company presents
by Gabriel Diego Hernández and Rachel Elmer
Gabriel Diego Hernández│Jersey City, New Jersey
A young father in the playground, eleven-month-old baby in tow, engages another (unseen and unheard) parent in the park in a conversation about neighborhoods, fatherhood, and culture, processing some of his traumas and insecurities along the way as he tries to predict the factors that will shape his child’s Latinx identity. Meanwhile, his alter-ego, a swaggering hip hop jester named MC Plátano (accompanied by DJ Quenepa's virtuosic beatboxing and soundscaping) peels off to comment on the action, fill in some of the blanks, and ask us some difficult questions.

Gabriel Diego Hernández
Gabriel Diego Hernández is a hip hop artist, actor, poet, educator, and playwright who originally hails from Hoboken, New Jersey. After receiving a bachelor's degree in Latin American Studies and a master's degree in Education, both from Yale University, he returned to his hometown to teach drama and direct shows at middle schools and high schools for a decade before transitioning full-time into the performing arts world and focusing on his own work as an actor and writer. He is a proud ensemble member at Pregones Theater in the Bronx. Recent acting credits include El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom (Two River Theater), ¡Guaracha! (The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater), CasablancaBox (HERE Arts), and Cándido Tirado and Vico C’s reggaetón musical La Canción (Repertorio Español). Quarter Rican, his first full-length play, was developed for five years under the mentorship of Jorge B. Merced. They shared excerpts of the work in urban gardens all over the South Bronx before going on to have workshops at Pregones, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and Newark Symphony Hall in partnership with Yendor Theatre. March 2023 saw the world premiere at Mile Square Theatre in Hoboken followed by an Off-Broadway transfer to the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. That run was nominated for four HOLA Awards, and Hernández took home the award for Outstanding Performance in Musical Theater. In April 2024 he performed the show for a week-long residency at UrbanTheater Company in Chicago and more performances are scheduled for 2025 in various parts of the country. His next show Thoreau is several drafts in and was recently accepted into the Garden State New Play Festival for a six-month developmental process. Gabriel serves as the education director of Mile Square Theatre and lives in Jersey City Heights with his wife and writing partner Rachel and their two young children.
