Latino Theater Company presents
Written and Translated by Georgina Escobar
Directed by Daniel Jáquez
Camino23│San Diego, California
A deconstructed Western that explores societal constructs of femininity and class through the lens of Birdie Zermani. As her mind deteriorates, our aging matriarch is launched into a fabula of history and myth revealing a parallel deterioration of a family and a society in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua in the 1980s. Persecution, forbidden love, curses, rattlesnakes, suicide come together in a visceral family drama where the Zermanis are forced to cope with the death of their legacy amidst the rise of a new generation of ‘society’s finest.’

Camino23
Camino23 is a bilingual, bicultural, binational space where actors in the region flex their muscles and train by building a supportive ensemble of artists committed to learning our plays, our history, our scholarship, and our struggles. It is a space where trust is built and self-expression is welcomed, and where established Latinx theater artists can find a place to mentor and pass on their wisdom. Camino23 is a binational group of artists who reside in San Diego, California and Tijuana, México. We were founded in 2019 by Daniel Jáquez. Since then, Camino23 has worked with National, bicultural and binational artists with projects like Voces en el Umbral in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. We have also worked with artists like playwrights Georgina Escobar and Jesus Valles. In 2023, Camino23 put on their first production titled, Stoneheart by Georgina Escobar and directed by Daniel Jáquez. This play was produced by Camino23 and Diversionary Theatre. In December of the same year, they gathered artists from both sides of the border with the collaboration of the Consulado General de México en San Diego and Tuyo Theatre for dramatized readings of Oscar Liera’s plays under the direction of Daniel Jaquez at The Old Globe Theater. The project Voces en el Umbral was created to highlight and promote contemporary Spanish speaking playwrights. In 2024 a new cohort of Latine artists joined the training and meet every Monday at Diversionary Theatre to bolster their artistry, skills, storytelling and most importantly empower each other. We are looking to grow our community outreach and work with other organizations both in San Diego and Tijuana that are in alignment with our vision.
